The Chiefs will open the Playoffs at home for all 3 games against the Greater Vancouver Canadians. This should be a good series as both teams won 2 out of the 4 games played against each other during the regular season.
The Cariboo Cougars and Vancouver North East Chiefs split their double header in Coquitlam over the weekend and secured the second and fourth spots, respectively, in the standings. Liam Blackburn (Prince George) opened the scoring for the Cougars with a shorthanded goal in the first period off a pass from Stephen Penner (Prince George). A few minutes later, Dalton Yorke (Maple Ridge) got the Chiefs on the board with a power play goal, assisted by Matthew Barzal (Coquitlam) and Boston Colley (Pitt Meadows). With less than 15 seconds remaining in the opening period, Kurt Sonne (Maple Ridge) scored the Chiefs second goal with help from Nicholas Rasovic (Anmore) and Peter Matthews (Coquitlam). Late in the second, Rasovic scored for the Chiefs followed by an unassisted goal for the Cougars by Blackburn. The Cougars Braiden Epp (Prince George) made it a one (1) goal game less than 60 seconds into the third period when he scored off a pass from Kirk Hards (Prince George). Late in the final period, the Chiefs scored back-to-back goals a minute apart thanks to Burk and Colley to secure the victory. Barzal finished the game with five (5) assists for the Chiefs.
The first period of game two (2) was the most exciting part of the game as all eight (8) goals were scored in the first 20 minutes of play. Just thirty seconds into the game, Brad Morrison (Prince George) opened the scoring for the Cougars followed by the Chiefs first goal by Brandon Volpe (Port Coquitlam). Morrison scored the Cougars second goal just over a minute later with help from Eli Jarvis (Quesnel) and Ryan Forbes (Kitimat). Chiefs' Barzal blazes through Week 1
By John Kurucz, Coquitlam Now
Read more:
The good news is that they scored 10 goals. The bad news is that they conceded 11. The Edmonton Oilers of the 1980s they are not, and as such, the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs had to settle for a 5-5 tie and a 6-5 loss to the Okanagan Rockets in the first weekend of B.C. Major Midget Hockey League play.
"I liked how we competed against a team that I knew was going to be strong and fast," said Chiefs coach Doneau Menard. "It was a bit of an eye opener for us, and for us to only come out with one point was disappointing, but it was a one-goal difference in those games."
On the plus side, Coquitlam wunderkind Mathew Barzal collected a cool eight points - two goals and six assists - in what was his first taste of major midget hockey.
Suffice it to say, the jump up in age and calibre of play didn't have much of an effect on the 15-yearold.
"It felt good to get those first games out of the way," he said Wednesday. "I had some bounces go my way which resulted in some goals. I dished some out, and my wingers were burying."
Not to be outdone, Barzal's linemates - Tim Chow and Colton Kehler - also put up respectable numbers. In Chow's case, the 17-year-old PoCo native potted a hat trick and an assist in Sunday's 6-5 loss, while Kehler collected a pair of points over the two games.
"The fact that we scored 10 goals was good," Menard said. "I thought that one of our concerns would have been goal scoring. I don't know that the verdict is complete on that, but it was nice to see that it was different guys who were putting the puck in the net."
This year's edition of the Chiefs will be hardpressed to replicate the firewagon brand of all-offence, all-the-time hockey last year's club employed. Some of the more notable losses from last year include Jace Hennig, Adam Rockwood and Jamie Waddington, who combined for 124 points one year ago.
Because of that void, the team will have to play a more well-rounded defensive game, one that preaches the process over point totals. That's easier said than done, however, for a group of new faces.
"Our style is going to be a little bit different this year," Menard. "We did score some goals over the weekend, but I don't think we're going to have quite the high-powered offence that we had last year."
One of the new faces that will be tasked with those defensive responsibilities is 15-year-old Port Moody native Lucas Johansen, who is entering his first year in the major midget ranks.
The younger brother of NHLer Ryan Johansen, Lucas recorded an assist and four penalty minutes in his first weekend in major midget.
"It was definitely faster and the players were a lot bigger," said Johansen, who spent last year playing bantam hockey in Port Moody. "You can't really do the same things you did in bantam where you some times rush the puck a bit more. Now you have to move quicker, and you have to play more of a team system to win."
Last season the Chiefs marched to a 23-13-4 record, good for third place in the 11-team loop. The focus this year is to hang around the top five during regular season play, and make some noise come the postseason.
"We've got a good offensive squad, our [defencemen] are pretty steady on the backend and our goalies are really good," Barzal said. "Our goal right now is to get into the playoffs and be a contender."

|
Last weekend 80 of the top Midget players from Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Ridge Meadows attended the Vancouver NE Chiefs evaluation camp.
The weekend camp saw the players divided into 4 teams and put through high level practices and scrimmages showing their individual and team skills.
NE Chiefs Head Coach Doneau Menard, " We thought that the talent was good. Most of the players we expected to, showed well and appeared to come in shape. There we some nice surprises from players who have done some hard work over the summer to get ready for this season "
From the evaluation camp 40 players have been selected to go on to Main camp.
"Now we wait and see how our returning players do at their respective Jr. camps before we see what available spots there are. The defence coming out of camp looks good and has some size. Our top end forwards should be able to create some good offensive numbers. We have some gritty players willing to make it hard on other teams as well." said Menard
Next Steps for the Chiefs will be practices and exhibition games to evaluate the players for the final 20 player roster that will be named on Sept 15th.
1st Exhibition game will be a split squad, home and home series against the Greater Vancouver Canadians on Sunday Aug 19. Game 1 starts at 1:00 pm and Game 2 goes at 2:45 pm. |

Our Chiefs staff is pleased that we have our local talent remaining in our zone once again with the Coquitlam Express. Daniel had a great year and was one of the top goaltenders in our league both statistically and in wins. Adam broke scoring records for our club and some league records as well. He had a great season. It is a big jump to Jr A but both have their games ready. The Chiefs wish them success and are proud that they continue to pave the way for more young talent to add to the success of the Major Midget model. Best of luck, Head Coach Doneau Menard.
